From Gardeners' World to the White House - green-fingered Hampshire team sow global sees of success
Nether Wallop Trading, founded in 1993, is manufacturer of a range of unusual, useful and well-made garden products. All of its wooden goods are sourced from managed woodlands and the ethos behind everything is environmental concern and sustainable living.
The company has recently been involved not only in the UK's most prestigious gardening event, the Chelsea Flower Show, but also the leading US industry showcase, the National Hardware Show.
So what’s the secret behind this jet-setting company? The sweet smell of success began in December 2006 when founder, Jane Vere-Hodge was referred to UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in the South East. Jane joined Passport to Export, UKTI’s 12-to-18-month flexible programme designed to help new and inexperienced exporters understand and target international customers. As well as a full company diagnostic and development of an export action plan, the programme provides subsidised training, up to £1,500 of matched funding to implement export plans, and the services of an experienced International Trade Adviser (ITA) to offer advice and guidance.
Martin Gower-Smith, Nether Wallop Trading’s ITA at UKTI, has worked with the company since they joined Passport to Export. He said: “Taking part in overseas exhibitions is an effective way to test markets, attract customers and identify distributors. Funding from UKTI. through the Tradeshow Access Programme (TAP), which provides up to £1,800 for attendance at overseas trade shows, has helped make this a reality for Nether Wallop Trading.”
With this support, the company exhibited at Spoga, in Germany, last July under the auspices of Gardenex, the export federation for the British garden and leisure industry.
Jane said: “We would not have been able to go to Germany were it not for UKTI funding. The German gardening market is the biggest in Europe. It’s one of our key target audiences, so having a presence at the show was crucial.”
This dynamic company will not have time to rest on its laurels after exhibiting at this year’s pinnacle of the gardening calendar, the RHS Chelsea - it’s time to think global as the team embark on a new UKTI programme, Gateway to Global Growth. This is a free service to experienced exporters, offering a strategic review, planning input and support, including financial and legal advice, to help them develop their business overseas...more |
